Kalkan is quietly sophisticated and with an ambience that is very hard to match in other destinations. The village consists of narrow cobbled streets which all lead to the picturesque harbour here you will be able to enjoy a drink whilst watching the “comings and goings” of harbour life. One of our favourites is the local café bar at the light house which makes it′s own ice cream and where you will also find a warm welcome.
There are also stylish and atmospheric Blues and Jazz bars. The village shops stay open till around midnight and are well stocked with hand crafted jewellery, clothing, textiles, and barbers etc.
Eating Out
Leading off from the harbour is a wonderful choice of restaurants where you can eat excellent food, many with roof top terraces offering a wonderful view of the harbour and the starlight night sky. The type of menus on offer is very varied ranging from very traditional Turkish cuisine to modern interpretations of the country′s food, all offering very good value for money. Depending upon your taste an above average meal costs for three courses for two people costs around £35,
Food Shopping
For general food shopping there are five supermarkets within easy reach of the villa all offering a free delivery service. You will find a good range of Turkish amd n European goods. If you wish to use the villa washing machine it would be useful to bring with you washing tablets as washing powder is sold in large quantities.
Locally made bread is very good and can be bought in many shops. You will be able to find a good butcher opposite the taxis rank, selling good lamb and steak, in the same area below the taxi rank are several stalls selling fish, fruit & vegetables.
Shopping
Market Day in Kalkan is Thursday and is situated about 5 mins by car, or 15 minutes on foot from the villa. Starting at 8:30am and going through to 7:00pm the market traders erect covers over the entire site. Here you will be offered wide a variety of goods including locally grown produce. Particularly good value are herbs and spices, honey and cheese. You can also buy a variety of t-shirts, jeans, watches, leather goods and textiles. Chatting to the stall holders is good fun and you will ne offered apple tea. Market day in Kas is Friday.
Banking
The currency is Turkish Lira. You can changes Traveller's cheques and Sterling at the local Bank or Post Office. Both are open very long hours. The Banks offers cash machines (Bankamatics), which direct you in English. The majority of the shops and restauants will take all major bank and credit cards.
